Poker Hand Rankings

Before you start playing a game of poker for real, you need to learn the poker hand rankings. Make yourself familiar with the poker hand rankings as most of the beginners make a mistake when the person thinks he/she has got the best winning hand, and they don’t.


To win in poker, the player has to make the best combination of 5 cards (a combination of 2 hole cards and 5 community cards). A player holding the best hand at a showdown or the player that makes the last uncalled bet is usually a winner. 


Don’t know if a flush beats a straight? Or quads are beaten by Royal flush? Refer to the hand rankings below for all the information you need to make the best combination of 5 cards. The ranking of cards has been defined from high to low. 


  • Royal Flush:

The best hand is the famous combination, formed by a Straight Flush that runs to the Ace, making it unbeatable and the rarest.

  • Straight Flush:

Straight flush is made up of five consecutive cards all from the same suit.

  • Four of a kind/ Quads:

When a player has all four cards of a given number, then it is called Four of a kind. It’s a very powerful hand.

  • Full House:

Full House is called when a player has three-of-a-kind and a pair in the same hand.

  • Flush:

When all five cards in a hand are of the same suit, it is a flush. If two players have a flush then the person with the highest card of that suit wins.

  • Straight:

Five-card hand with a running sequence of cards regardless of the suit is called straight. The straight of the higher card wins when two players have straights.

  • Three of a kind:

Three cards of any rank, matched with two cards that are not a pair.

  • Two pair:

 two pair poker

Two pair is a hand that contains two cards of one rank, two cards of another rank and one card of a third rank

  • Pair:

 pair poker

When a player has two cards of the same number,, a pair is formed.

  • High card:

 high card poker

When no combination is made, then a player's hand is valued at the highest single card. If two of the players have the same high card, then the second-highest card would break the tie.
