The Women of Poker

It’s the twenty-first century, and its time to accept that women are no less than men. In fact, they are taking the world stage at a much higher rate than can be expected. And, so, on the stage that hosts poker, women have covered a good amount of ground.

Although no woman has won the World Series of Poker championship, they are no less competitive than the men in the tournament. Their calls, bluffs, and raises are on point, and women have completely shaken the world that was earlier apparently dominated by men. So, let’s have a look at the best women poker players in the world.

1) Venessa Selbst

With winnings to the tune of $11.85 million, there is no iota of doubt in the fact that Venessa Selbst, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Yale University, is the best female poker player around. Apart from having the most amount of winnings, she won a staggering $1.8 million at the Partouche Poker Tour. The American poker player has three WSOP Bracelets in open events, eight final tables (including two in the World Poker Tour) and twenty in-the-money finishes. She’s retired now, but Venessa Selbst still holds the first rank among women poker players.

2) Kathy Liebert

Favoritely called PokerKat, Kathy Leiber is one of the overachievers of poker, with lifetime winnings of almost $6.3 million. The poker powerhouse has six WPT final table finishes under her belt, along with a WSOP bracelet at the 2004 $1500 Limit Texas Hold’em Shootout, not to mention a groundbreaking 47 WSOP money finishes. She has also won $1 million at the Party Poker Million in 2002. Just 2 years back, she finished in the top 50 at the WSOP. This woman is to look out for at any poker game involving her.

3) Annie Duke

Annie Duke, a.k.a the Duchess of Poker is the only woman to win the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship. She has finished in the money in thirty-eight WSOP and four WPT championships, and is, therefore, a formidable player to play against. With a lifetime winning adding up to 4.25 million, the sister of Howard Lederer (a titan poker player himself) has a WSOP Bracelet to her name.

4) Annette Obrestad

Annette Obrestad is an online poker champion, having won around a million dollars on Full Tilt, Pokerstars and UltimateBet. The Norwegian poker star started her online poker exploits at the age of 15, and has since made career winnings of $3.4 million. She was not even 19 when she won the WSOP Europe for a million pounds. She also won a staggering $175,000 at the 2010 Aussie Millions, and has since then won a WSOP bracelet, over 10 money finishes, and reached the final table at the European Poker Tour.

5) Liv Boeree

The British is only 35 years of age, and has career total winnings exceeding $3.5 million. The poker prodigy, having been coached by Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke, among others, sealed her claim to fame with a 1.25 Million Euro win at the EPT San Remo. One of the most famous poker players, ‘Iron Maiden’ as she is fondly called, has 12 in-the-money finishes in the WSOP Main Event. Lately, she finished 10th at the 2017 PokerStars Festival in London in the High Roller Event.

Texas Hold’em Poker has come a long way from the Horseshoe Casino, and women are proving it on a daily basis. So, be amazed, be inspired and get ready to show the world your mettle! See you at the tables, women.
